JPG or PNG — which to use
JPG stores photographs compactly by discarding detail the eye rarely misses, which is why it suits camera images and large product shots. PNG stores every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which is why logos, screenshots, diagrams and flat-colour graphics look cleaner in it.
One thing conversion cannot do is restore detail. Compression already applied to the JPG is baked in; converting to PNG stops further loss from that point on, but it does not sharpen what was lost.
Expect a larger file
Because PNG is lossless, the converted file is usually bigger than the JPG you started with — sometimes several times bigger for a photo. If the PNG is only going on a web page, run it through the compressor afterwards or keep the JPG instead.

- bring the file size down afterwards — the lossless PNG is often heavier than the original
- change the pixel dimensions — scale the image up or down before converting
- trim the visible area — keep only the part of the picture you need
