Selling Price and Profit Calculator
Work out profit, markup and margin from cost and selling price.
Answers one question: at this selling price, what do I actually earn? Add packaging, shipping or marketplace fees as extra costs and you get profit per unit, total profit, total revenue and total cost together.
How to use Profit Calculator
- 1
Enter cost price and selling price.
- 2
Add quantity if needed.
- 3
Review profit, markup and margin.
How profit per unit is worked out
Profit per unit is selling price minus cost price minus any other per-unit costs you enter. Multiply that by quantity and you have total profit for the batch, order or month.
The extra-costs field is where sellers usually find the surprise: packaging, courier charges and marketplace commission often turn a healthy-looking gap between cost and price into a thin one.
Profit, margin and markup are three different numbers
Profit is money. Margin is that profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is the same profit expressed against the cost price, which is why a 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin.
This page starts from a price you already have in mind. If you would rather start from the percentage you want to keep and let the price fall out of it, the margin calculator does that instead.
What to do next
- price from a target margin — start with the percentage you want to keep and get the selling price
- add or strip out GST — keep tax separate from your profit maths
- test a sale price — see what a promotion leaves you with
